Senior reflection: Chase Deist

Reflecting upon senior year, I definitely came into it with some unrealistic expectations of what my year would entail. As part of my senior reflection, I want to take it upon myself to do some senior year myth-busting for all you upcoming seniors.

Myth 1: Time Flies

This is a weighted myth. It’s definitely true, time really does fly. It feels like just yesterday was my first day of senior year. The reason this myth is not entirely true is that it flies for the wrong reason.

Most weeks, I found myself wanting more school days in the week. When you’re in the thick of your senior year and you have three teachers breathing down your neck at any given time, telling you to turn in one of the five million projects you owe them, you will understand this. Some of your days will be so crammed with work that it will all become a blur.

Myth 2: “It’s senior year! You can finally relax!”

Don’t worry! Senior year definitely is fun and has its relaxing moments, but it’s not all fun and games. As I explained in the first myth, senior year certainly is packed full of assignments. My recommendation is to quickly find out how to manage your time so you can have the most fun you can possibly have throughout the year. I think I really set myself up when I went into senior year thinking I would have no work. My advice is to go into senior year motivated to get the best grades you can while still setting aside time to have fun with friends both inside and outside of school.

Myth 3: Senioritis Will Kill You

YES! At the end of my junior year, I was diagnosed with early onset Senioritis. By the time senior year came around, my Senioritis had evolved into full blown chronic Senioritis *sniffle sniffle*. The rumors are true, as soon as you walk into school on the first day of senior year you WILL feel an overwhelming want…no…NEED to slack off. The best way to curve this need to slack off in my opinion is to try to finish all your work when you’re in class or at STEP. You’re required to come to school, so leave the slacking-off for at home.

I hope my myth-busting shed some light on senior year for all you rising juniors and underclassmen. Although senior year was definitely one of my hardest years so far, it also was the most fun. Senior year has definitely been eventful either way!
