Girls basketball looks to conquer Cougars, break three-game skid

Girls basketball has been on a three-game skid but look to break it later tonight, January 23, when they take on the Quince Orchard Cougars at Quince Orchard at 7:15pm.

Girls basketball looked to end their two-game losing streak on Thursday, January 19, but sadly extended it and were out-howled by the Clarksburg Coyotes in a 38-44 loss. Communication was a problem for the team according to senior center Shawna McDougall. “It was definitely communication in the first half,” McDougall said. “But I think we started to pick it up in the second half. It’s just we didn’t finish and we got a little bit too emotional.”

Mcdougall added that she feels “confident. I feel like we can be able to finish strong and hopefully progress pass the second half of the season.”

The Lady ‘Rines were stung by the Damascus Hornets last Tuesday with a 66-32 loss. “They had a lot of shooters on their team,” junior small forward Consuelo Moody added. “We didn’t play defense like we should’ve, we didn’t execute plays……we had already prepared for them but when we got on the court everything we practiced, we forgot.”

The ‘Rines went to battle with the Gaithersburg Trojans but unfortunately lost with a close score of 48-52. Watkins Mill came out guns blazing in the first quarter outscoring G-burg 19-12. From there it was a back and forth battle between to the two teams until the Trojans pulled through to get the win. Boxing out was the missing link for the Mill’s varsity team. “We had a little miscommunication,” senior guard Amashia Moyd said.

Despite the loss, Moyd thought the team did well. “We had a great practice [the day before] and that led us to a great game because we knew what we were doing, we were strong.” To bounce back from this loss Moyd says the team must, “boost up [their] energy, practice hard and strong, box put and call out plays.” Come and support the Lady ‘Rines as they take on the Quince Orchard Cougars tonight!
