Boys set new personal records, while girls run into second place at cross country meet

Cross Country is looking to effortlessly dominate their next race today at the Coyote Run after their strong performance at their last meet on October 6 against Rockville and Wheaton high schools. The Lady ‘Rines took second place, while the boys all set new personal records.

At the previous meet on September 24, the Wolverine boys took fourth place. But this time, they all set new personal records. Junior Rasheed Gaal finished with a time of 18:49. “My teammates strive me to be first,” Gaal said. Sophomores Harris Malik and Saul Flores finished with times of 19:30 and 19:39 respectively.

“Our overall performance as a team increased as our times decreased,” Malik said. The boys celebrated this win as their first victory in three years. “Watkins Mill could potentially be a threat in the upcoming years,” Malik added. Since most of the team are underclassmen, the Wolverines’ future looks promising.

After finishing first out of all of the Wolverine runners, Gaal looks to continue his dominance on the course. “I will try to beat the school record of 17:00,” Gaal said.

The Lady ‘Rines also had a very successful meet as they finish second out of four teams. Senior Lisa Franco finished second out of 33 runners with a time of 21:19. Franco has been an outstanding runner in both cross country and track and field since she entered the school in 2012.

Although the ladies were successful, senior Marian Sankoh believes that “the team should work on being at practice on time, complaining less about the workouts, and actually doing the workouts.” Sankoh ran a time of 25:23 at the previous meet. Junior Rhoda Miller also finished with a time of 25:34. All three girls look to continue their running excellence throughout the season and hope to qualify for the South Region Championships.

Not wanting to rest on their laurels, the whole team is looking to improve further.  “The team should do more hill workouts,” Gaal added.
