Football prepares to make major comeback against Rockville Rams tonight
Wolverines get ready to face the Rams at Rockville High School tonight after a tough loss against the Seneca Valley Screamin’ Eagles last Friday, 0-61. It was just a minor setback for a major comeback.
Senior captain linebacker Clarence McNeary felt excited about last Friday’s game as they prepared to take on the Screamin’ Eagles, not just for himself but his team as well. After putting in the time for film and long practices, before the game, McNeary said, “It should be a very competitive and intense game.” Which it definitely proved to be.
Our boys made very tough plays with the help of their coaches and fans, with special thanks to the cheerleaders for hyping up the crowd. Senior receiver Gedeon Elenga-Mandzila said that throughout the game, “We picked our tempo up, we didn’t give up and we still fought.”
Junior running back and safety Brian McNeary and junior safety and wide receiver Daquan Wims were definitely players to watch. With Wims taking charge and McNeary’s intense tackles on the field, these two were a dynamic duo. Senior tight end Lawrence Kouadio said he is “100 percent positive and confident” in the team.
Senior captain running back and linebacker Antony Zavala added that he was and is still as confident as Kouadio. Although it is his last season playing for Watkins Mill, he knows for a fact his team will be great. Brian McNeary spoke about how the team is improving after every game. He added that junior center Connor George “stepped up and did a good job” against Seneca Valley, performing even better than he did in the Poolesville game.
Even in bad weather, the team managed to fight their hardest. They went in ready for a battle and came in fighting the war. Coach Jamaly Allen said, “One thing I will say is even though the score is out of hand, my boys never gave up. People like [Clarence McNeary] and [senior defensive linemen Geeonni Brooks Pickett], even to the last play, they were still tackling hard and they were still doing their assignments. So that’s one positive that came out the game.”
Clarence McNeary said that Wims, senior outside linebacker defense Isaac Adams, and sophomore quarterback Markel Grant all had outstanding performances that night. “They made their plays and abused the opponent,” McNeary said.
Wims said if there was one player he could single out for an outstanding performance, it would be Brian McNeary, “because he gave it his all the whole game.” Wims added that “there were still a couple of players that tried hard after the first half.”
Pulling from our 13-7 win against the Poolesville Falcons October 1, our ‘Rines will come back with the same fire against the Rams tonight.
Watch out Rams, the ‘Rines are coming and they’re hungry. Stay tuned.
