Without hesitation, the Wolverines pounced on their opponents at the Penn Relays on April 28 and look to continue their success in the Montgomery County Championships today.

The Wolverines marched onto the campus of the University of Pennsylvania with the will to win. The boys 4×100 team came in fourth place, 74 overall out of 235 schools. The 4×400 team also came in fourth as they ran in the tenth heat (one being the fastest, 33 the slowest).

The 4×400 team did not do as well, but they got some sort of redemption in the 4×100. The Lady ‘Rines came in second place in the race, and 37 overall out of 370 schools.

Unfortunately, in their last battle on April 19, the Clarksburg Coyotes  fought back, and the team didn’t perform very well. Individually, the leaders of the team decided to step up, and get some wins for their team.

As always, senior Schezarone Carter met his opponents at the finish line, placing 1st in all of his events. Junior Brian Mcneary refused to lose, coming in third in the 100 meter race just milliseconds away from Carter. “I just have to practice my start, and practice keeping my head down to get a better time,” Mcneary said. “I’ll definitely keep working to beat [ Carter] in the 100.”

The boys 4×400 relay team kept their confidence up, and beat the Coyotes with a lead of 11 seconds. The girls relay teams did not do as well, but in their open races they did very well. Junior Rhoda Miller placed in first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.7. “My time could’ve been better, but I’m still happy that I won,” Miller said.

Senior Alyssa Rishell flew threw the finish line of the 800 meter race placing in first. Rishell was ahead of her opponents by seven seconds. It may not seem like much, but in track that is a lot of distance.

Prior to these events, the Wolverines participated in a meet in honor of their coach Jim Vollmer who passed away in May 2014. This must have been inspiration for the Wolverines as both the girls and the boys placed in the top ten overall.

The girls placed sixth out of 14 teams. Both relay teams for the 4×100 and 4×200 meter races came in second. To add some distance and endurance wins the 4×400 meter team came in 1st.

Miller and senior Alyssa Rishell both were in the top ten for their races. Rishell came in fourth for the 800, and second for the 400 meter race. Miller placed in fourth overall for the 200 meter race.

On the boys side, senior Gedeon Elenga had an amazing day placing in the top for the 100 meter race. His performance in the preliminary race led him to the final race of the day where he ran a time of 11.68 seconds. “Since I rolled my ankle, I couldn’t really perform to my full ability, but it was still a good race,” Elenga said.

The Wolverine boys 4×100 team flashed past their opponents, placing in first overall with a time of 44.89 seconds. This was a major accomplishment for the team that allowed them to carry their success on into the Clarksburg meet and into Penn Relays.

The ‘Rines will keep striding forward into the county championships, and show the world that speed kills.
