Basketball plans to rebound tonight against Screamin’ Eagles in tough, four-game week
Boys varsity basketball looks to clash with the Seneca Valley Screamin’ Eagles tonight here at the Mill after a tough one-point loss against the Poolesville Falcons on Wednesday. All of Orange Nation should come out and support and lead the ‘Rines to their third victory.
In a back-and-forth match-up up against the Poolesville Falcons, the ‘Rines put everything on the line. The team switched leads often in a game that went all the way down to the wire. Watkins Mill clawed back into the lead several times but at the end of the game they couldn’t get ahead and lost with a heartbreaking score of 49-48.
The team had a busy week this week, making up for the two games that were cancelled in last week’s blizzard, playing on Monday as well against the Northwest Jaguars. “We played [well] in the first half, and towards the end, things started to go down,” junior Kendall Sewell said.
With their lead gone at the half, coach Corey Robinson told the team to put in more effort and the ‘Rines came out fighting in the second half, looking to make their comeback. Even though the Northwest Jaguars got an eventual win over the ‘Rines, they left a scar with a miraculous 15 point comeback. “We were down by 18 or 20, but we managed to get it down to 4,” Sewell added.
The four-game week started rough for the ‘Rines, when they didn’t quite manage to send the Clarksburg Coyotes away with a loss on Saturday, ending the game with a final score of 73-61. Junior Eric Molina stayed positive though and said, “We did well on getting players open, and driving hard to the basket.”
Molina added that in order to win closer games like that one, the team needs “to work on boxing out, and being stronger in the paint.”
Although the team has started the season with 2-10 record, they know they can improve their performance from the beginning of the season. The ‘Rines look to come out fighting tonight against the Seneca Valley Screamin’ Eagles at 7:15 at home.
