Football falls to Falcons in Homecoming game
Wolverines football fell short to the Poolesville Falcons last Friday, October 20 in a heartbreaking loss. After a back and forth game, the final score was 41-48 in overtime.
After falling to the Damascus Hornets, the ‘Rines hoped to bounce back against the Falcons in their homecoming game. Before the game the ‘Rines tore through a banner made by orange nation saying “Happy homecoming. Welcome back alums tonight blackout in the den ‘Rines are ready to fight.” The crowd made tons of noise to welcome the team onto the field.
The Wolverines debuted their brand new black Nike jerseys for the Homecoming game. Students showed their school spirit by matching the football team in the game’s theme, blackout. The stadium was packed with students from Watkins Mill, feeder schools, parents and the Watkins Mill class of 1997.
The ‘Rines went up 13-0 in the first quarter but the Falcons were soon to catch up. Senior Salekri Sayeh came up with a huge interception in the beginning of the third quarter. “I was very happy to get an interception. It gave the team new found energy,” Sayeh said.
Watkins Mill cheer was joined by the Dynamite allstar Firecrackers cheer team to help them cheer on the team during the game. “It was actually a really great experience and they already know about cheer leading… so it was like teaching one of our girls how to cheer. It was really cute, they’re so nice and sweet,” junior A’Shanti Roger said.
Halftime featured performances from marching band and poms. Presentations of the senior homecoming court and results of the winner followed after. Seniors Megan Dakwa and Salekri Sayeh won homecoming queen and king.
The ‘Rines kept their energy high the entire game but fell short in the end. The team played a fantastic game but sadly couldn’t keep up with the Falcons in overtime. Come out to watch your ‘Rines take on the Gaithersburg Trojans in the varsity seniors last home game this Friday, October 27 at 7:00pm. Come help cheer the team onto victory!
