Cha-Ching!

Clubs and organizations at Watkins Mill High School are holding fundraisers as a way to raise money for school clubs and sports.

The GoFundMe for the WMHS weight room “started as something small and turned into something big,” athletic director Reggie Spears said. “We have raised around $3,200 for this cause.”

The GoFundMe fundraiser for the weight room is mainly focused on making the weight room a safer and better environment.

“We want to get new dumbbells ranging from 10-100 pounds,” Spears added.  ”The dumbbells we have now are as old as the school.”

The entire athletic department is doing the “Wolverine Challenge” to raise money for their programs. They send out letters and emails to people they know, including family and friends, to ask for their sponsorship during the fall season.

The Wolverine Challenge means that “we are able to reach out beyond our community,” business manager Julie Broyles said.  “When you are in this community, and you only reach out to this community, sometimes fundraisers can saturate the community and people get tired of us asking for money. But by doing this letter outreach, they can send letters to California, to different countries, or they can send letters anywhere they have family and friends.”

Sports are not the only groups doing fundraisers though. The music department has done a lot for their program just this school year. Chorus held a “Chipotle” night in Germantown and the marching band held three car washes in August and September–one at Bob Evans and two were at Sonoco in Goshen.

The music department is also selling pastries through a company called “Claire’s Gourmet” to raise money for a trip to New York City to watch a professional musical.

The Fashion Couture Club is taking pictures of teachers and students wearing pink to school for Breast Cancer Awareness. The pictures will be put up in the mixing bowl and for just a dollar, you can vote on who wore pink the best.

The National Honor Society is also raising money for breast cancer awareness by selling pink pins all next week and all the money donated goes directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Sisters in Success are selling Halloween treats and a note for anyone who would like to send them to any other student or teacher in the school. The profits go directly to their club to help them do community activities.
