On March 24th, the Maryland State Board of Education approved a resolution that would waive three days of student attendance. This means the final day of school is June 18th and no longer June 25th.
The main concern regarding the school calendar is how classroom instruction would meet the state’s instructional requirements. Schools must teach at minimum 1,080 hours for middle and elementary school students and 1,170 for high school students. The adjusted schedule has allowed MCPS to meet and exceed these requirements.
Monday, June 15th through Wednesday, June 17th are full instructional days. The new last day of school, Thursday, June 18th is an early release day. There is no school on Friday. June 19th (Juneteenth) for the Federal holiday.
For schools following an innovative calendar, their final day of school will be Wednesday, June 17th.
MCPS is already looking ahead to possible future weather-related disruptions. On March 26th, MCPS submitted an Inclement Weather Learning Plan to the Maryland State Department of Education. Once approved, this plan will allow instruction to continue virtually through multi-day closures. MCPS will be reviewing the 2026-2027 school calendar to mitigate future interruptions.
