During the week of November 9, 2025, the Maryland State Department of Education announced that Watkins Mill High School has officially risen from a two-star to a three-star rating on the Maryland State Report Card. The new rating marks one of the school’s most significant academic achievements in recent years.
The increase reflects improvements in the school’s attendance rates, academic growth, and overall school climate, placing Watkins Mill on an upward trajectory that students, staff, and families have been building.
Principal Vilma Najera celebrated the news, highlighting the collective effort behind the accomplishment in the November 9th school weekly newsletter.
“What an incredible week at Watkins Mill High School! We are super pumped and proud to share that we have officially moved from 2 stars to 3 stars on the Maryland State Report Card! This achievement is more than a number; it’s a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and heart of our entire school community. Our teachers continue to give their all to ensure every student grows and succeeds. Our students are showing up, engaging in learning, and pushing themselves to do better every day. And our families and community continue to stand behind us with support. Together, we are changing the culture of Watkins Mill and creating a place where excellence, pride, and perseverance shine through in all we do. The sleeping giant has awakened, and our story is one of growth and commitment.”
The Maryland State Report Card evaluates schools on a one-to-five-star scale, measuring both performance and improvement across six statewide indicators:
- Academic Achievement
- Academic Progress
- Graduation Rate
- Progress in Achieving English Language Proficiency
- Readiness for Post-Secondary Success
- School Quality and Student Success
As the school community celebrates the jump to three stars, staff say the focus will now shift toward sustaining that progress.
