Boys varsity baseball  looks to claw their way through the Colonels as they start their playoff journey today at Magruder High School. The boys are coming off a tough loss to a very talented Bethesda Chevy Chase team on Tuesday with a final score of 1-9.

In the game against B-CC the boys didn’t give up many runs but couldn’t get on the scoreboard enough. The team started freshman Brady Allen as pitcher for the game and he did a good job.  “[Sophomore] Lucas Richards pitched four scoreless innings and we allowed zero runs after the first two innings,” junior Joel Webster said.

The team faced the Northwood Gladiators on May 4. It was the most exciting game of the season with our boys coming out on top and defeating the Gladiators 7-6. “The Gladiators hadn’t won a game, so that motivated us to do well,” junior Daniel Suarez said. The game was competitive and close, and the ‘Rines stuck in and didn’t give up.

This was the fourth victory of the season. The ‘Rines were down 2-5 but came back after “clutch hits from sophomores Exlee Dawson and Kevin Finn,” Webster said. The team is using this momentum to push for a playoff run. The energy was high for this game and “We were very hyped,” Suarez added.

The team lost a tough game against Damascus on May 3,  0-10. The team fought hard and came up short. Damascus is a talented team, but the ‘Rines are learning from their mistakes and working hard in practice to get better. Richards said, “We pitched the ball bad, we threw good pitches to bad hitters, and bad ones to good hitters.”

The boys wants to focus on hitting and fielding in practice. The practices have been high energy and positive and because they already beat Magruder earlier this season, they are well prepared to do it again and advance in the playoffs. The team is peaking at the right time and the players are very excited, they have already eclipsed their record from last season.
