Sports Wrap-up January 28-31
Boys Basketball
Watkins Mill High School’s Wolverines won a blowout matchup against Poolesville High School’s Falcons with the final score of 76-35 on Friday, January 24. “We executed well, played good defense, and we all just trusted each other and worked together as a team,” junior Sidney Lebonzo said. “It’s what helped us come out with a win.” Lebonzo scored 23 points during the game.
The team lost a hard-fought matchup to Blake High School’s Bengals with a final score of 58-62 on Tuesday, January 28 but they hope to bounce back tonight at 7:15 against Magruder High School on their home court.
Girls Basketball
The Watkins Mill High School Wolverines faced off against Poolesville high school at home on January 24.
The girls played a fierce game against Blake High School on January 28. Every player on the court played as a team, the plays were executed nicely and the defense was aggressive. Even though the girls suffered a tough loss, it was a very close game. Blake High school won 38-36. “I [think it’s important that] we didn’t give up,” junior Henrietta Amankwah said.
Wrestling
The Watkins Mill High School Wolverines faced off against the Gaithersburg High School Trojans on January 29. The ‘Rines earned a victory with a total of 45-36. Stand-out performances include senior captain Victor Kum and sophomore captain Romeo Tsai. “We all used our techniques and followed what our coaches taught us, I’m really proud of my performance,” junior wrestler Elike Kalin-Samlan said.
The ‘Rines go up against the Gladiators at Northwood High School tomorrow, February 21 at 1:oo pm.
Swim and Dive
The Watkins Mill High School swim and dive team faced off in a scrimmage against Blair High School on Saturday, January 25, at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center. “I personally feel like I did the best I could,” senior captain Miyah Hayes said, “and I cheered my team on as much as possible.”
The team hopes to live up to their team motto “swim fast in white water” tomorrow, February 1 at the Olney Swim Center in the County Divisionals. They also plan to say goodbye to their seniors with a win. “I’m looking forward to the senior ceremony tomorrow where they send [the seniors] off but it will be my last meet as a wolverine so I have mixed emotions about tomorrow,” Hayes added.
