Both Watkins Mill girls volleyball and boys soccer came through with a home victory yesterday, while both tennis and golf looks to bounce back from recent defeats.

After starting the season off with two defeats by the Wheaton Knights and Clarksburg Coyotes on September 8 and 11, the tennis team keeps their heads up and hearts filled with determination for a successful season.

Girls tennis fell to the Knights last Friday. This was their first loss of the season. “We didn’t have a million practice hours prior to it, so it was really tough,” tennis coach and physical education teacher, Kauri Martin said.

Junior Josephine Oshagbemi took the sole victory on Tuesday against the Clarksburg Coyotes. “Everyone on the team is pretty dedicated,” senior Ciennah Siryon added.

Wolverines boys soccer traveled to Northwood High School yesterday, September 14, looking to take down the Northwood Gladiators at 6 pm. Despite the competitive match the ‘Rines were able to put together coming off of a great win over the Clarksburg Coyotes the night before, the team wasn’t able to pull out a win, losing 2-4.

Moving towards the rest of the season, senior Yann Kouemi looks to “play the same way [as we did against Clarksburg], and get the win.”

Varsity volleyball fought hard yesterday, September 14, against Seneca Valley High School and got their first victory to improve their record to 1-3. The ‘Rines are finally coming together.

“Despite the fact that we won, as a team we didn’t play to our best potential. I feel like if we focused more and put our head into the game we could’ve beat them 3-0 instead of 3-1. I need to work on communicating better with my teammates and we need to learn how to adjust to different types of teams,” senior Daad Gabbani said.

The Wolverines golf team fell during the match this past Wednesday at Falls Road Golf Course, the Rines placed 4th in their match against schools including Rockville, Seneca Valley, and Gaithersburg high schools.

The team fought hard and showed very impressive performances at their match but fell short two points, placing 3rd. Coach Richard Riley talked about the match by saying, “it was disappointing to come short two points from getting in the top three, but we just need to keep on working as team.”

The ‘Rines are looking to keep on working in preparation for the next match. Senior Exlee Dawson said, “We didn’t do that well, but we try and support each other to get better every day. The main goal is to try and get lower scores in order to win the match as a team.” Teamwork is a main aspect that the team will use to in order to win matches later on in the season.

The golf team will try to dominate in their next match on Monday, September 18, at Redgate Golf Course against Paint Branch, Seneca Valley, and Kennedy.

Looking to finish the week out with a win, Varsity boys football plays against Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School tonight at 6:30 on the home Wolverine territory. Come out and support the boys by wearing beachy attire in spirit of tonight’s tropical theme!
