Trampolines? A ninja warrior course? Rock climbing? Sounds like the perfect birthday party!

But, for some Watkins Mill students, this is work.

Many students struggle between the balance of  finding a job and school but sophomore Christine Carballo, and seniors Aryana Ware, Walter Ballard and Catherisa Apostol, found their job at Zava Zone, an indoor adventure park with trampolines, a ninja warrior course and rock climbing walls.

College and Career Center Administrator Deborah Prochnow sent an email about a job fair in March, which helped these students find out about Zava Zone.

“I started working there, because I wanted to try something new,” Ware said. “I worked at the City of Gaithersburg’s mini golf course for two years and it was getting boring. Plus [Zava Zone] has air conditioning.”

Apostol is having a great experience at her first official job. “When I found out [Ware] was [applying], it made me want to [apply to Zava Zone] more,” Apostol said.

Many benefits come with the job including that “[the other employees] are good people to work with,” Ballard said.

“Most of them are local high-schoolers and college students at MC, so they are really easy to talk to and make connections with,” Ware added, another benefit is that “staff gets to go there for free when they are not working.”

“Some of the kids coming in [can be] very difficult to deal with, but it all depends on the kids themselves,” Apostol added. “But overall I’m just making sure the kids stay safe.”

Even though the kids can be irritating at times, Carballo still likes them. “[I am] a coach,” Carballo said. “[I] watch little kids and make sure they know what to do at the [zone].”

Hyper kids are not the only challenge, but parents can be as well. “When it comes to the ninja warrior course and trampoline dodge ball, the adults seem to be the most excited and tend to over jump,” Ware said. “They also tend to believe that they are sure of their abilities. Because of this, they hurt themselves a lot more than the kids.”

So if you are looking for a place to take your siblings to over the summer or a job, Zava Zone is the place.
