About Us
Welcome to The Current!
Here’s a little bit about us: In the mid-2000s, Watkins Mill’s journalism program died out. Blame it on a lack of interest, the growing IB program pulling some of the best kids, or any number of other factors. But no news, in that case, definitely wasn’t good news.
In 2010, then-principal Scott Murphy hired English and journalism teacher Sara Confino (then Goodman) to restart the journalism program. Some hard work and elbow grease later, the revamped Current was born.
In 2015 though, The Current was struggling financially and only putting out four issues a year because of those money problems. The economy was in rough shape and our community was feeling the burden. The staff voted unanimously to make the jump to publishing exclusively online (largely because our lack of funds meant we were only publishing four times a year, leading to a lot of jokes that we were actually the “NOT Current.”)
With new principal Carol Goddard’s blessing, The Current began publishing online in October of 2015. Since then, we have brought you daily coverage of Watkins Mill life, becoming the first school in Montgomery County to publish news every single school day.
We have had two stories go viral and be picked up by national news media so far, and one of those stories got a state law changed. We’re pretty proud of that around here.
