Volleyball teams wrap up seasons strong, prosper in playoffs

Watkins Mill boys volleyball ended their season with a tough loss 2-3 on the road against the Paint Branch Panthers on Thursday, April 27. The team came in strong but it was not enough to hold off the panthers.

The team didn’t end their season how they wanted, finishing with losing record of 2-9 , but they still had a lot of fun. “It’s been pretty fun,” junior Naing Oak said. “Everyone has been really nice and really understanding the coaching staff has been great. Even though, I’m not going to lie, on game days has been a struggle we all have just been having fun. No one has been pointing fingers and that’s the best part about this team.”

The coed squad on the other hand ended their season on a high note winning against the panthers 3-0 on the road. It was a well fought game for the ‘Rines. They finish with the record of 5-6 and hope to bring their play from this last game into the playoffs. Throughout the season the team has grown and it has all been for the playoffs.

Both our coed and boys volleyball squads played the Einstein Titans on Wednesday, April 26. The boys were finally able to claw out a win over the Titans in a nail biting 2-3 game here at the mill. All of that hard work they put in over the losing streak finally clicked and got them the long awaited win.

The coed team lost a nail biting 3-2 finish here at the mill. The Titans just got the better of the Rines which allowed the captains to work on what needed to be fixed before playoffs.

“We were not communicating and lifting each other up,” junior Camille Allie said. “Just talking to each other, lifting each other up, paying attention to plays and watching the ball.”

Both squads faced the Poolesville Falcons on Monday, April 24. The boys are desperate for a win this being their 8th consecutive loss. They lost to the Falcons 0-3 at Poolesville. Their chances for the playoffs have dwindled to almost non-existent but they still have a lot of fun playing.

“It’s really fun and really laid back,” said Oak. “It’s not as competitive as soccer so it’s easy to get into.”

The coed teams streak finally ended against the Falcons 0-3 at Poolesville. But with this streak they were able to make a playoff berth a reality which was the goal during the season. They also have been improving greatly over these past 4 games. “We are becoming more of a team,” said junior Lataijo Ouattara. “Although yesterday we didn’t win I still feel like we are still getting closer, and I am sure that the three game win streak really reflected on that.”

Our coed and boys volleyball squads battled the Northwest Jaguars on Friday, April 21. The boys lost yet another hard fought match which continue the losing streak. They fell to the Jaguars 1-3 at Northwest. They hope to make several changes that will take into effect over the next couple of days.

The coed team was able to continue the streak against Northwest and move to a 3 game win streak over the Jaguars 1-3 here at the mill. They have been playing great and are really developing over the season. “We are just trying to get into the playoffs,” Ouattara said. “That’s pretty much our driving factor.”

Our coed and boys volleyball squads took on the Seneca Valley Screamin Eagles on Wednesday, April 19. The boys lost to the Screaming Eagles 0-3 at Seneca. For the boys this would continue the already growing losing streak in their season. They hope to bounce back and recover next game to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The coed squad got a huge win 3-0 in the nest of the Eagles. They were able to carry the performance from the Damascus game on Wednesday, April 5 and grab another win.
