Rising freshmen visit Watkins Mill for Eighth Grade Parent Night
Future Wolverine students and parents were invited to Watkins Mill High School for Eighth Grade Parent Night last night, February 16. This event was opened to students from both feeder middle schools, Neelsville and Montgomery Village.
The Eighth Grade Parent Night consisted of several tours around the school led by student volunteers, who helped future ‘Rines learn more about the school and how to get around it. Tables were set up around the gym showcasing several departments, clubs and sports. Both the International Baccalaureate and the Middle Years Programme were also on display.
Rising freshmen and their parents had the chance to learn about the programs and clubs that are offered at the Mill, including ACES, CollegeTracks and the athletic department. “[I like Eighth Grade Parent Night] because so many people come together…[to] show our incoming ninth graders–our future Wolverines–what Watkins Mill is going to be like,” resource counselor Adam Saltzman said.
“I liked how organized it was and how we got to meet each other and how we got to see new faces,” Montgomery Village Middle School eighth grader Letitia Fianko said. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people and seeing how [Watkins Mill] does things.” She is interested in joining ACES and finance programs.
“[I’m looking forward to] meeting a whole new group of people and having a whole new experience at school,” Roberto Clemente Middle School eighth grader Dora Kreitzer said. She is interested in partaking in the school newspaper, sports teams, Interact Club and the National Honor Society.
“I enjoyed touring [Watkins Mill]. It’s very big and I feel like I’ll get lost a lot, but I think I will get used to it,” Montgomery Village Middle School eigthth grader Elike Kalin-Samlan said. “I’m looking forward to all of the classes and seeing new people.” Kalin-Samlan is interested in joining clubs that will challenge his creativity.
“I loved the energy this year [because] we upgraded and we had our Spirit Dude [science teacher Matt Johnson] and Orange Nation in the house, and that added to the excitement,” Saltzman added. “They [brought] amazing energy to the whole event…this event really put Watkins Mill on display.”
