The African Student Association (ASA) hosted its seventh annual African Ball on Friday, March 21, 2025 at Seneca Valley High School. The event was a collaborative effort between Seneca Valley, Clarksburg, and Watkins Mill High Schools to celebrate African culture and traditions.
Attendees were greeted with a verbal itinerary upon arrival. Many students wore traditional African clothing and head wraps adorned with vibrant colors and intricate patterns, adding to the lively atmosphere. Lines quickly formed for traditional dishes like Nigerian Jollof rice, plantains, beignets, and chicken, giving attendees a chance to experience African cuisine.
The program began with introductions from ASA members representing each school. Performances followed, starting with Seneca Valley students showcasing their talents through dance and music. Shortly after, Clarksburg students delivered equally engaging performances that highlighted African traditions.
Throughout the night, the DJ played a variety of songs from across Africa, including music from Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Ivory Coast. Students danced enthusiastically throughout the night. A cultural tradition was also observed where students used fake money to celebrate each other’s performances – a common practice in African parties and celebrations.
The evening concluded with dessert and photo opportunities in front of elaborate decorations. The African Ball provided a space for students of all backgrounds to come together, enjoy cultural traditions, and celebrate African heritage through food, music, and dance.
