Watkins Mill High School’s Theater club are performing “Mean Girls: the Musical” for their spring play at the O’Shea Theater. The first show is this Friday.
“Mean Girls: the Musical” is a rock musical based on the movie “Mean Girls” from 2004. It’s about a teenage girl, Cady Heron, who transfers to her first public school after being homeschooled in Africa. She befriends Janis Sarkasian and Damian Hubbard who persuade her into joining a school clique called the Plastics, who consist of Gretchen Wieners, Karen Smith, and Regina George.
When asked about how the musical was coming along, senior Jasmine Momyer, who’s playing Cady Heron, said, “We’re very excited for the upcoming performances, and I think it’s going to be a really good show.”
“I think the musical is going really well. I think we’re in a really good spot. Everyone’s having a lot of fun. [Sets and props] are getting built and it’s going really great,” Said senior Cassidy Pranger, who’s playing Regina George.
Pranger said, “[Regina George is] a really fun character to play, especially because she’s so different from me…and it’s really fun being able to experience portraying someone so different from myself.”
“I really like [playing Cady]. At first, it was unexpected that I got cast, but I really enjoy playing her and I really like singing her songs,” Said Momyer—who auditioned for Regina but got cast as Cady—when asked how she liked her role.
The musical will be at 7 pm on March 28th and 29th, as well as April 4th and 5th in the O’Shea Theater. Tickets will be sold to students for $5 and adults for $10.
“For some [students], it’s their first time on stage. For some, it’s their last time on Watkins Mill’s stage. It’s bittersweet,” said the Theater club sponsor Jamaly Allen when asked how the actors were doing.
