Teacher Ligia Gorton is offering Hatha Yoga classes for staff during STEP to bring mindfulness and relieve stress.
Gorton—who is a long-term yoga practitioner and a yoga 200 hour teacher—wants to share the mindfulness that yoga brings her to her colleagues. The yoga classes are available during STEP in the dance studio and are 30 minutes long. The next class will be happening March 21st.
“I feel, see, know, and hear the daily stress [staff] experience in our daily jobs. Several of them have shared that they wish they had the time to join yoga class.” said Gorton.
Hatha yoga is a type of yoga that is slower and allows physical flexibility in postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama). Gorton said, “It is a way to center one’s mind, rejuvenate, and ‘let go’ of little things we tend to apprehend that are not worth our health and time, clear our mind, and move on feeling better about ourselves.” and, ”Any yoga practice seeks to find gratitude, peace, revitalization, de-stress, healing, and meditation.”
Teacher Yosohadara Rivera said, “Participating in this class with Mrs. Gorton was a truly rewarding experience. Her patience, dedication, and commitment to teaching me new postures while ensuring proper technique made all the difference,” Rivera continues, “beyond the physical and mental benefits, I found that this shared practice helped strengthen bonds with my colleague, Mrs. Gorton. I am extremely grateful to Mrs. Gorton for her voluntary work.”
According to the American Osteopathic Association, yoga provides many benefits, both physical and mental, like: improving cardio and circulatory health, improved muscle strength and tone, protection from injury, stress relief, sharpened concentration and increased body awareness.
