On February 18, PG Sportsplex hosted the 3A West Indoor Track Regionals. Featured in the 55-meter hurdles, 55-meter dash, 300-meter dash and spot put, five outstanding Watkins Mill track stars advanced to the 2025 MPSSAA Indoor Track and Field State Championships on February 24.
One of the team’s newcomers, sophomore Sydney Thomas delivered an excellent performance, earning the 3A West Region Champion title in shot put. Driven by her love and passion for the sport, Thomas perseveres, putting in time outside of practice as much as within it. Putting her all into States, Thomas reached 10.67 meters at States, ending up as top three in shot put.
Serving as a guide to beginners, senior Madison Medley finished her senior year off strong in indoor track and field by additionally earning the 3A West Region Champion title for 55-meter hurdles. Pushing to become a pentathlon and a multi-event athlete, Medley continues to thrive and doesn’t stop pushing. Despite the nervousness, Medley achieved 5th in shot put at States. As the outdoor track season approaches Medley advised aspiring track beginners that, “The only person there to help you is yourself…You have to be able to push yourself to the max every single time if you want the best outcome.”
Junior Mark Aghadiuno has been running for six years and is in his third year on the indoor track and field team. He is one of the two track stars heading to States in the 300-meter dash. Feeling excited for States, Aghadiuno crossed the finish line at 36.64 seconds, finishing 12th in the 300-meter dash. With dreams of becoming a state champion and attending nationals, Aghadiuno is filled with dedication and determination and continues to flourish in his track career.
Senior, Sam Koiwood, is a multi-event athlete, who qualified for the 55-meter and 300-meter dash. Hoping to run track in college at a D1 level, Koiwood is motivated by, “My drive to be the best and my family to make them proud.” Placing 6th in the 55-meter dash and 11th in the 300-meter dash at States, Koiwood shares his tips for beginner track students: “Hard work beats talent, if talent doesn’t work, go put in the work…As long as you continue to work, just leave the rest up to God,” he said.
Last but not least, the 5th Rine’ who qualified for States is senior Angela Key-Barnes. She qualified for shot put, ending with a distance of 9.54 meters, finishing 10th at States.
Serving as the pride of track, heading to State Championships is one of the biggest accomplishments students can achieve in indoor track and field. Watkins Mill is so incredibly proud of each and every one of them and honored to be supporting and guiding such hard-working and dedicated athletes.
