Watkins Mill High School is proud to announce that senior Eva Lake Olan has been selected as one of the recipients of this year’s highly esteemed Posse Scholarship.
The Posse Scholarship is an award presented to students nominated by their high school who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and academic potential. Both of this year’s winners have exemplified these qualities.
Eva is a dedicated member of the Tech Crew for the O’Shea Players, the school’s drama program. In addition to her contributions to the theater, she is an active athlete, participating in the girls’ Track and Field, Lacrosse, and Cheer teams. Eva also participates in extracurricular activities as a member of the French Honor Society, the Baking Club, and the Debate team.
“My initial reaction was excitement. I felt and still feel so grateful to have this opportunity, especially with the way this scholarship works—you go with 10 other students from around the DMV. Of course, I also feel a little nervous to start this chapter,” says Olan.
To qualify for the scholarship, students must submit a teacher’s letter of recommendation. Science teacher Karen Doerrler provided a letter for Eva, expressing her support: “I really hope that it is able to help her in what she wants to do. It is a great stepping stone for her,” says Doerrler.
Eva plans to attend Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee during the upcoming fall semester of 2025. While she is still deciding on her major, she is considering a field in environmental science or pursuing a medical career.
Olan advises upcoming seniors to apply for the Posse Scholarship: “Posse is an incredible organization, full of supportive people who help guide you through your college journey. Everyone I’ve met so far has been so caring and has really shown a genuine interest in the well-being and success of their Posse Scholars,” Olan states.
Everyone at The Current congratulates Eva and looks forward to witnessing her bright future.
