Wally the Wolverine is an icon, representing Watkins Mill High School. With the former Wally having graduated last year, who is our new Wally for the 2024-2025 school year? Follow this interview with the current Wally to learn more about them.
Who exactly is Wally the Wolverine?
“Theoretically speaking, Wally is a school mascot. However, I don’t want it to be just a brand, but I want to be able to interact with the school population and bring back school spirit.”
What motivated you to become Wally?
“A friend mentioned Wally’s vacant position half absent-mindedly, but I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve been jokingly posting about Wally since freshman year, so I thought, ‘Hey, why not commit to the bit?’ Mrs. Squier contacted me to check out the suit; from there, it was history.”
Are there any struggles of being Wally?
“The suit is very hot. It was like 50 degrees at the last football game, but in the Wally suit, it felt like 100 degrees. The suit is hot and stuffy. I have no mouth, and I must scream. It’s fluffy inside the suit too, but the sweat clings onto my skin. That’s why it’s pretty stinky. Thirty years of mascots add up!”
What do you love most about representing our school?
“Honestly, what I love most is being able to be in our school population and help with all these events I wouldn’t do otherwise. The fun factor of being the mascot is that people don’t recognize me when I’m going about my day.”
What advice would you give to students who want to get involved in school spirit and activities?
“Go to opportunities like clubs and sports games. Just contributing time can let people know how much you care about your school.”
Tip for teams:
“Put a tiny message if you want Wally at your games (tell your coaches to reach out)! Let them know that you want Wally at your games somehow.”
