The “just got back from summer break” phase of the school year, filled with fun ice-breaker activities and easy assignments to ease into the new school year, is long over as we find ourselves a few weeks into the second quarter.
Now, we’re fully swamped with test after test, assignment after assignment. On top of schoolwork, extracurricular activities can create a whirlwind of responsibilities that can easily become overwhelming.
I know I’ve felt helpless because of the amount of work and the many responsibilities I signed up for before the school year even started (Phew, I was really motivated back then!). But it’s important to remember that while it’s great to be involved, it’s equally important to make sure you don’t experience burnout.
Here are three tips to help you balance schoolwork and extracurricular activities more effectively:
- Create a Schedule
It’s so easy to overlook the benefits of using a digital or paper planner. Keeping a detailed planner with chunks of time dedicated to studying, extracurricular activities, and ‘me time’ will ensure you aren’t burnt out and help you finish your work on time. Mark down extracurricular commitments and due dates/assessments for school to ensure you don’t overbook yourself!
- Learn to Say No
The biggest lesson I learned last year was how to say no to additional responsibilities, so I didn’t get overwhelmed. Rather than dedicating time to random activities, focus on those you truly care about and where you can make the most impact.
- Seek Help When Needed
If you find yourself struggling, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Your teachers, counselors, and other trusted adults can offer support to help you with your commitments and schoolwork. They’ll be able to guide you more about specific tips catered to you.
Using these tips will help you maintain your sanity (or at least what’s left of it) while being able to be productive and make change through your extracurricular activities. Remember, taking things slowly is okay, and you’re not alone.
