Watkins Mill High School hosted its annual Extracurricular Clubs and Activities (ECA) fair on Tuesday, October First. The event took place during lunch in the school’s auditorium.
Many clubs, all student-led, participated in this year’s fair. Some of the club highlights include many new club chapters opening at WMHS. These include, but are certainly not limited to, the Immigration Reform Club, Immig(Rines) 4 Reform, and the new ECO MOCO chapter.
The immigration reform club opened a new chapter at Watkins Mill High School. The club advocates for the rights of immigrants within the United States. The specific goal for this chapter at WMHS is to fight for equal opportunity and rights for immigrants. The club is open to everyone who wishes to participate, including undocumented students, first-generation students, and allies.
“This club has changed me because I have a lot of family and friends that are undocumented, and a lot of them are afraid… [this] is just a way that I can help them express their voices where they can’t… I have more power… [to] fight without being scared because I’m not the one they’re targeting.” says club member Vivian S. Urbina.
Another new club chapter that WMHS is now offering is ECO MOCO, a student-led non-profit organization that strives to make our county greener and promote student leadership. This club will do trash cleanups, analyze Great Seneca Creek, located next to WMHS, and educate others on how personal actions significantly impact our environment.
President Evin Fernando says, “I’ve become more aware of … where to recycle… I really take that into consideration now, and really think about what I’m going to do,[and] how can [it] affect the environment as well… We need to preserve our planet…so it only takes one small step, like joining our club.”
WMHS has many clubs for students to join, and there were many new additions this year. Staff encourage students to join a club and participate in the WMHS community. “We are a great community…[you] get to make new friends…there is just a lot you can do [to] have a great time,” said marching band member Seline Smith.
