On September 10, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump spoke on live television during the presidential debate to secure votes for the upcoming election. Except, who really won?
Every election year, the United States holds a series of presidential debates between the two candidates running for president. They run over their future agenda goals and state their stances on controversial issues to prove why they should be elected president.
Harris first asserted her confidence by taking the initiative to shake hands with Trump. This first move laid the groundwork for how she presented herself as strong and competent to show why she should be elected president despite being a woman. She effectively proved this by throwing personal attacks at Trump and emphasizing the differences between her character and Trump.
It was clear that Harris was getting under Trump’s skin. For example, she bashed Trump’s rallies and said, “…people will start leaving his rallies early, out of exhaustion and boredom.” Trump dismissed the moderator’s next question and responded to this attack instead as he was offended. His reaction essentially hurt his image, as it was unprofessional.
Lastly, Harris emphasized the differences between her and Trump. She said, “You will not hear him talk about your needs, your dreams, and your desires.” This shows how she wanted to create that gap between her and Trump, which displayed their distinct priorities. She tried to clarify that Trump doesn’t care about the people: only she does.
Trump’s dismissing the questions was able to make Harris look better composed, since he was only focused on responding to her attacks. Additionally, Harris’ body language was able to emphasize her performance. She faced her body towards Trump while Trump never looked at her, which additionally weakened his appearance.
Harris has established a strong candidacy with her remarkable performance at the debate. She proved herself to be a tough woman who is prepared and ready to lead the nation. There is no doubt that Harris will continue to impress the country and has a chance to win the president’s seat in November.
