Watkins Mill High School’s annual homecoming will be held on Saturday, September 30 from 7 to 10 pm in the main gym. Tickets are sold for $20 online through the School Cash Online portal and in the mixing bowl throughout this week. The last day to purchase tickets is on September 29 during STEP.
Every year, homecoming generates excitement from both students and staff. The annual homecoming halls competition, done by each grade’s class council, starts this week. This year’s theme is Romantic Comedy movies; seniors did Mean Girls, juniors did High School Musical, sophomores did Clueless, and freshmen did Mamma Mia. The hallway decoration planning has been happening since the start of September with students working hard during lunch and after school.
“The preparations for the halls were terrifying, we thought we had all the designs painted and ready to be hung but once we started, there were a lot of empty walls missing designs,” junior Priscilla Aboabea-Saakodee said.
WMHS will have various clothing themes for each day leading up to homecoming. The themes are as follows:
“Let’s do a makeover”: Dress as your favorite movie character.
“On Wednesdays we wear Pink”: Wear your best pink outfit.
“We’re all in this together”: Rep your class colors. The freshmen wear white, sophomores wear orange, juniors wear blue, and seniors wear black.
“I have a dream”: Get comfy in your PJs!
“I think we tried our best to make our hallways look good but we could have done better with more time. Although we didn’t have a huge number of people helping, we had a small group of people consistently helping so I’m so grateful for that,” sophomore Junee Kim said.
One of the most exciting parts of homecoming week is the football game that everyone looks forward to. This year our ‘Rines will take on our rival school, Clarksburg Coyotes, at home on Thursday, September 28.
“For the football game, I hope we beat Clarksburg because many of my friends go there. A little bragging doesn’t hurt,” Aboabea-Saakodee said.
The pep rally will also be on Thursday in the stadium during seventh period. Students and staff are looking forward to all the events, encouraging others to participate in Spirit Week and show up for the HOCO game.
“The best part was seeing everyone smile and their satisfaction with the hard work we all put in. Seeing smiles on their faces made me very happy,” Aboabea-Saakodee added.
Good luck to the football team and may the best decorations win!
