Not breaking tradition, staff might have changed, but this won’t. The writers of The Current are back with the yearly “Freshman do’s and don’ts.”
PS: This doesn’t only apply to freshmen. If you notice similar characteristics in yourself while reading, please change ?
- Don’t stand in the E hallway and cause traffic:
- There are three different kinds of people: Those who stand and talk to their friends, those who are looking for where to go, and those trying to get to class. Unfortunately, I’m the one trying to get to class. I don’t know if it’s the slow walkers or the chit-chatters, but it needs to be solved soon. As for those who walk 0.5 miles per hour, I don’t want to shove you, but if I have to, I gotta do what I got to do. (This is satire. Maybe).
- Also, those walking while looking at their phones are just as bad. Please look up. I’m not a wall, so don’t bump into me.
- Do ask for help if you need it:
- If you don’t know where you’re going, ask. If you’re lost, ask. If you’re not sure you’re in the right classroom, ask. Teachers and students in this school don’t bite (as far as I know). You’ll get used to the letters for hallways. I’m in my senior year, and I’m still following the signs. That’s what they’re there for. So instead of roaming the halls and clogging up the hallways, ask and get to classes as soon as possible to make a good impression!
- Don’t wander around or lollygag:
- This is pretty self-explanatory. I don’t think there are any positives to wandering around because you’re just getting into trouble and stressing the admins for no reason. Having a good impression on your teachers is important as well.
- Do use deodorant/perfume:
- This is mentioned repeatedly in every freshman advice article and every “What to know before your freshman year of high school” TikTok videos, but it’s mentioned repeatedly for a reason. Personal hygiene is not only good for you but also be considerate of others. It’s a silent killer of both your friendships and social life.
- Don’t be loud:
- Please don’t talk too loudly at 8 in the morning. It’s not funny, and it annoys people because why should I wake up so early in the morning for school to hear noise from random people in classes or hallways?
- Do join clubs and sports:
- Clubs don’t only look good on college applications, which you’ll need later, but they’re also a good way to meet new people with the same interests as you. Joining clubs later for your extracurriculars and for “looking cool” will not be as enjoyable because you’ll have limited time in that activity. Some sports need people, and you can connect with your teammates. Even if you are a newbie, JOIN JOIN JOIN.
- Don’t stress out too much:
- Try to have fun and create memories with friends.
Be confident, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. YOU GOT IT!
