Coed, boys volleyball plan to swat Damascus Hornets tonight
Wolverine volleyball will face off against the Damascus Hornets tonight, coed at 5:30 and boys at 7:15, after a tough lost to the Clarksburg Coyotes. The Wolverines played well against the Coyotes, but couldn’t finish for the win.
While the ‘Rines fought hard against the Coyotes, neither coed nor boys could pull through, both losing 0-3. The ‘Rines also played against the Quince Orchard Cougars, again losing 0-3 (coed) and 0-3 (boys) on Monday. The ‘Rines fought hard and made a great team effort for both games but came up short.
Senior Jeffery Arnold said, “We need to get closer as a team so we can know what to do from our teammates and expect it.”
The ‘Rines also lost to the Sherwood Warriors on April 5. The ‘Rines worked hard but lost 0-3 (coed) and 0-3 (boys). The ‘Rines also played against the Richard Montgomery Rockets on March 23, but took a loss 1-3 (coed) and 0-3 (boys), and on March 21 the ‘Rines lost to the Kennedy Cavaliers 1-3 (coed) and 1-3 (boys) as well.
“Things we need work on are calling for the ball,” senior Mary Washington Munjam said. “Communicating is important in the game.”
The ‘Rines took the second set from the Cavaliers [25-20] with a big contribution from sophomore Victor Iglesias and freshman Neba Ndonwi. The boys put up a good fight but just couldn’t cut it, leaving Kennedy to taking the next two sets.
Although the result wasn’t what they wanted, Watkins Mill played their hardest. “This sport is really fun, and we have a lot of talent and could be great but we just need to work on a few things,” Ndonwi said.
“I like our new coach. He is really amazing,” Iglesias said. ”I’m gonna work on my serves and my overall playing style.”
It seems that teamwork and communication is an issue but they are working on it and plan to change their mistakes in the upcoming games.
“This team is 100 percent better than last year and I am confident we can win some games this year,” Munjam added.
