Football pulls off win against Gaithersburg Trojans on senior night

Wolverine football beat the Gaithersburg Trojans for the first time since 1993 at their last home game Friday night with a winning score of 38-26, making Watkins Mill history.

Being the last home game for ‘Rines football, the school honored the seniors one last time in a senior night. All of the names of the football, cheerleading, poms, and marching band seniors were announced one last time.“I knew it was going to be one of the last times I would hear my name called in the den,” senior Salekri Sayeh said.

Prior to kickoff the football team ran through a banner that read, “Class of 2018 We Hate to See You Go One Final Home Game Let’s Put on A Show,” for the last time this season. The ‘Rines went into the first half energetic and confident. They knew they had a real chance to beat the Trojans and kept that energy the entire game.

After keeping a close score with the Trojans for the first half of the game, the ‘Rines came out into the second half with even more momentum. More plays were being completed and the defense was successfully holding the Trojans. Everyone was playing their heart outs on a night to remember.

On the sidelines, the cheerleaders not only cheered for the ‘Rines last game, but they held up each of the seniors showing the crowd the faces of the soon to be graduating class of 2018. During the halftime poms performance, the team not only honored the seniors, but performed with former Watkins Mill poms alumni.

But at the end of the night it was a very emotional night for everyone, especially senior captain Michael Smith. “My emotions didn’t hit me until the end of the game [when] walking off the field and realizing that this was the last time I’d be on this field playing,” Smith said.

Throughout the entire season the ‘Rines persevered and never game up, especially during the Gaithersburg game. The final football game of the regular season will be at Blake High School. Come out and watch the last game!
