WTOP’s Click for Kids Sweepstakes begins today, Monday, March 6. Watkins Mill needs enough votes for a chance to win money for a new weight room.

There will be three monetary awards: a grand prize of $15,000, a first place prize of $10,000, and a second place prize of $5,000.

“Our weight room is pitiful, it’s been there since 1989,” principal Carol Goddard said. “I told WTOP that we were built in 1989, and [that we have] a high FARMS [Free and Reduced-Price Meals] rate at 60 percent, and that we desperately needed a new weight room.”

WTOP ended up accepting Watkins Mill’s nomination to be a runner up for the grand prize. Special education teacher Termaine Belote is helping promote the competition by reaching out to the community. “It’s super important for everybody to participate and promote the [competition], not just teachers [and students, but the whole community],” Belote said.

“The easiest [way to get votes] is to utilize our breakfast time–everybody can vote at the same time,” Belote said. “It’s going to have tremendous effects, not only in athletics, but school-wide as well.”

Voting will be open from today, March 6 until Friday, March 17 at 5pm. Everyone in the community can vote, that includes students, staff, parents and community members. Everyone can vote once a day. “We all have to vote,” Goddard added.
