National Honor Society hosted its annual induction ceremony on Thursday, October 5, initiating the new members.

During the induction ceremony the NHS officers spoke about the vision and future plans for the organization as well as expectations for members and their responsibilities.

NHS has about 55 members now, inducting more members than last year. Inductees’ parents and principal Carol Goddard attended.

“Oprah Winfrey once said in adviser magazine, ‘Integrity is something that you do without letting people know that you done it,’” NHS sponsor Anita Rajeev said. “It kind of stuck in my mind because I think that’s what NHS is about.”

To be a potential candidate for membership in NHS, students must meet a weighted GPA of at least 3.5 or higher and have 75 or more student service learning. Members must be either a junior or senior.

Candidates must also meet the qualifications of the four pillars: service, leadership, scholarship and character. During the candidate process a five member teacher committee selects members. There are four officer positions available in NHS, officers get elected by members at the end of the school year meeting.

At monthly meetings members discuss opportunity for tutoring students, community service and fundraising. “I’m excited to be apart of an organization that allows us to give back to the community,” junior Zachary Pepperl said.

This year members are in the process of mentoring students at feeder school, Montgomery Village Middle School. “I’m looking forward to NHS becoming more visible in our community,” NHS president Natalie Rodriguez said. “I’m incredibly excited for all the idea that we are going to have and execute.”

Eligible students who want to join NHS next school year should listen for announcements near spring break. Students will know of acceptance by the end of the school year. For any other questions students should see Mrs Rajeev in D208.
