Mill Madness makes memories, starts season with spirit

The Mill Madness pep rally that occurred Tuesday, September 12, had a successful turnout for the introduction of fall sports. Hundreds of students came out to show school spirit.
The event was a great night full of food, giveaways, introductions of fall teams, performances, games, and dancing. Kona Ice and concessions sold cold treats and food for everyone to enjoy.
Boys soccer, field hockey, tennis, cheer, football, poms, OLAS, and K-Pop were introduced one by one to the crowd by science teacher and Orange Nation leader Matt Johnson. The introductions were separated by performances from poms, cheer, and K-Pop to show off their new routines and talent. “I think the performances were really good… and I think my team did really well with hitting all of our stunts,” senior cheerleader Eleanor Agyemang said.
Contests included a “we got spirit” cheer off that ended in assistant principal Steve Orders and science teacher Jerel Merrill getting pied in the face. A cookie challenge with team captains kept the night going. Cookies were placed on their foreheads and the captains had to quickly transfer the cookie into their mouth without using their hands.
“I think the contests were a good idea. They were fun and entertaining and showed how the teams interact with each other,” senior field hockey captain Virginia Schlosser said.
Chipotle cards were given to the winners of the contest during the pep rally. Students randomly marked with and X on their wristband won Chipotle cards as well. Watkins Mill t-shirts were slingshotted into the crowd and given out as prizes to random students.
Mill Madness was wrapped up with everyone chanting “Get up,” leading into a dance party with music provided by a live DJ. “I think everyone had a good time,” Johnson said. Everyone was able to enjoy the music and dancing while the disco lights and glow sticks lit up the gym.
The night was made a success with the help of Johnson, Orange Nation members, staff, and parent volunteers. SGA also helped in donating 200 glow sticks that were handed out to students to wear during the pep rally. “The school more or less came together as a community which was really nice to see,” senior Aaron Merlos said.
