Girls varsity basketball looks to take down the Wheaton Knights and pick up their third win of the season tonight, December 14, after beginning their season with two nail-biting victories and one heart-breaking loss.

The varsity girls basketball  team looks to take their third win of the season after a very close loss against the Sherwood Warriors on Monday, December 12 with a score of 59-60. “Our transition was not good, we didn’t talk, we didn’t know who had who…it was really bad,” senior Shawna McDougall said. “As soon as [the game ended], a lot of us [said] let this be the last one, we are all motivated to get a win [tonight].”

Before that, the Lady ‘Rines advanced to 2-0 with a close game December 6 against the Walter Johnson Wildcats, with a score of 43-38. The game went back and forth, with both teams fighting for the lead, until senior Rokhy Sidibe sealed the Mill’s victory with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws.

“I looked at the scoreboard and they were getting close, so I really wanted to help lift my teammates so we could get a win,” Sidibe said. The team was led by junior Princess Frazier, who tallied 12 points and seven rebounds on the night, and seniors McDougall and Sidibe, both with nine points each.

Girls basketball started the season out with an amazing win against Thomas Johnson High School in front of an impressive home crowd December 5. The team started the game off slow, but later turned on the heat, knocking down jumpers and making layups, outscoring Thomas Johnson 22-16. They kept the pace and sealed their first game with a 47-38 victory.

“[The game] felt great, [with] me being a senior, that [was] my last first home game,” McDougall said. “I was just really hyped for that game from the jump. Everybody was.” McDougall put up 20 points on the night for the Lady ‘Rines. “We’re off to a really great start,” McDougall added.

This was freshman Jada Thornton’s first game on the ‘Rides squad,  and she ended the night with six points. Thornton added, “I was nervous at first, but then I got used to it.”

Tonight’s game is away, at 7:15pm, at Wheaton High School, wish the girls basketball team luck as they try to go pick up their third win!
