Paychecks make working retail worth it, or would if not for children, taxes

Angie Perez

You know what sucks?

Working.

You know what doesn’t suck?

PAYDAY.

If you have a job you know payday is the only thing keeping from quitting your job. Unless you love your job.  If that’s the case, then just stop reading right now.

Now I love getting money, just like any other teenager, but I loathe work.
It’s depriving me of my sleep, and if you know anything about me, you know how much I love my sleep.

I miss those after school naps and getting to sleep in on the weekends.*sigh*

Trying to balance school, a job, and any extracurricular activities you might have going on is hard.

To make matters worse, you’re not even getting fully paid the blood, sweat and tears you put in (not literally… or maybe, depending on your job). Taxes takes half of your hard-earned money and leave you angrily cursing everyone. When I got my first paycheck, I was so happy about how much I had made.  And then I saw how much got taken out….a little piece of my heart still breaks every time I look at the amount.

They shouldn’t even advertise the pre-tax pay rate for jobs.  Why get everyone’s hopes up?  Just tell employees straight up that you’re really only going to get two-thirds of what they’re currently promising you.  That way, when paychecks come, the government won’t also be sucking workers’ souls out along with that tax money.

Working in retail during the holiday season, I learned a few things about life and people.

First, the customer is always right… just kidding. Now, I’m not saying every customer is dead wrong, but there are a few who seem to have their butt located on their face and WILL think they’re right no matter what and you just have to deal with it.

Second, you will start to despise human beings ages two-to-eight. I’ve always loved children, but after seeing dozens of kids wailing uncontrollably and their parents doing absolutely nothing about it, it’s hard to see why I was ever fond of them.

Third, you will never be able to walk into another store again and not sympathize with employees struggling to get through the day.

In the end, even though the struggle is real, always remind yourself… payday is worth it.
